Deer Threatens Women Inside Springfield House

Tuesday, November 25, 2008 – updated: 7:49 pm EST November 25, 2008

A woman in Springfield said she heard banging outside of her house, and discovered a deer was trying to get inside.

Evilyn Watford has lived in her home on West Singer Avenue for 33 years and was surprised at what she saw outside.

Watford said, “I looked at the dog passing something out here, and oh my God, there’s a deer out there.”

She said the deer bumped the side of the house with its antlers and broke one off.

Watford immediately called police. She thought the deer was going to jump through the windows in the back of her house. “He went prancing like he owned the front yard out there,” Watford said.

Barry Eggers of the Springfield Police Department said, “23 years on the force and this is a first for me.”

Officers thought the deer might have been sick or injured.

Watford said, “He was staggering back and forth.”

Officers were forced to shoot the deer before it injured someone.
