Freezing Rain Creates Icy Conditions

Monday, November 24, 2008 – updated: 3:00 pm EST November 24, 2008

The roads were slick all over the Miami Valley early Monday morning as freezing rain fell.

Rain that moved in overnight quickly turned to freezing rain around 5 a.m. Monday and led to numerous crashes, including one on Route 235 just outside Fairborn.

Authorities said several cars started sliding and one vehicle ended up off the road and on its side between a utility pole and a fence at the perimeter of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

The steady rain made the cleanup efforts of the Ohio State Highway Patrol and military police difficult. A bridge near the crash scene turned to a sheet of ice.

Another crash happened on Indian Ripple Road near Beavercreek when a vehicle slid off the road due to icy conditions.

Battalion Chief Greg Connors with Beavercreek Fire said the driver was “coming down the hill, hit a patch of ice, spun out and flipped over in the ditch.”

The female driver was trapped in her vehicle for a short time. Fire officials said the woman did not suffer serious injuries because she was wearing her seat belt.

Connors said, “We secured the vehicle with cribbing, tied it off to a tree, and then we cut the door off and took her out. She was stuck upside down with her seat belt on.”

The area is known to be a trouble spot when weather conditions are near the freezing mark with either snow or ice. There are ice signs posted in the area.
