Over 100 Planes Getting Safe Haven At WPAFB

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 – updated: 3:44 pm EDT September 5, 2008

Officials at Wright-Patterson Air Force base said they have received over 100 military planes and crews from bases on the east coast seeking a safe haven from Tropical Storm Hanna.

A large number off fighters, airlifters and other aircraft began arriving at Wright-Patterson on Thursday, filling the base's large parking ramps.

The first planes arrived on Wednesday afternoon from Jacksonville, Fla., including 13 F-15 Eagles from the 125th Fighter Wing of the Florida Air National Guard.

"Wright-Patterson has well established hurricane evacuation support plans and a robust capability to accept aircraft and crews," said Col. Bradley Spacey, 88th Air Base Wing Commander here.

Base officials said they are closely watching the storm before making a decision to accept 30 more planes.

Once Tropical Storm Hana rolls through, the planes may depart as early as Sunday.
